Ian Hodgson

Artist 231

Ian Hodgson Drawing Ian Hodgson is a British artist who specializes in graphite drawing. His drawings extend from the figurative through to the abstract and experimental.

When asked about his background Hodgson explains, “As a very young child, I wanted to be an artist. I also wanted to be a monkey but when I realized that it wasn’t possible to be both a monkey and an artist I settled on being an artist. I have always spent time drawing and after a few faltering attempts at further art education and alternative careers as a washer upper, commie chef, signwriter, factory worker and record shop assistant I finally settled into my art degree in Bradford, Yorkshire, at the tender age of 30.

I then began to take the art thing a bit more seriously and graduated with a first-class degree and moved down to Brighton. From here I have slowly built up an art career, exhibiting and selling locally, nationally and now internationally. I have worked in a launderette and had a number of domestic cleaning jobs to give me a regular income and allow my practice to develop.” His drawing process often leads to revisiting objects, figures and spaces and this reworking of the familiar has allowed Ian’s drawing practice to develop with each new approach, shedding fresh light on his subject matter.

“My work engages with identity and place. Emotional architecture. Psychological landscapes. Memory. Visibility. Revelation of the hidden. Liminal space. A moment suspended. An alteration of states.” - Ian Hodgson There’s a soft serenity to the eerie artwork of Ian Hodgson, or as he so eloquently puts it, “gritty undertones softened by ethereal overtones”. “My work is drawing based dealing with issues of identity, memory and place, the concept of 'journey', both physical and psychological an ongoing theme.” - Ian Hodgson

When asked in an interview what he hopes people find in his work Hodgson says, “I always hope that my work will tap into something on an emotional level with the viewer but I'm happy with anyone wanting to look at it for whatever reason, be it about technique or content.” #ianhodgson #drawing #graphiteart #graphitedrawing #artblog #artistoftheday #artistsoninstagram #artresearcher #celebratingart #investigatingart #blog #artist #art #contemporaryart #artistbio #arthistory #artresearch
