An Ode to Hermanus
Mural Installation 2025
12m x 2.5m

This mural 'An Ode to Hermanus' marks the first in a vibrant initiative located in Maitland, that aims to contribute meaningfully to the local public area by using art to enhance public spaces, foster community pride, and promote positive social change.

Coming from the perspective that art should not be confined to galleries and private collections espcially in a country like South Africa but rather that art belongs in public spaces where it can engage and inspire everyone.

This ongoing mural series will bring creative expression to the streets, transforming ordinary urban landscapes into dynamic works of art that reflect the character, values, and aspirations of the community.

By working with local artists and involving the community in the creative process, the aim is to create a lasting visual legacy that resonates with residents, visitors, and businesses alike.

Through murals that tell unique stories of the area’s culture and history, we are not only beautifying Maitland but also encouraging dialogue and connection among its diverse population.

Public art is more than just decoration; it is a powerful tool for bringing people together. We see it as a way to reflect the shared experiences, dreams, and struggles of a community while also sparking conversations around social issues and promoting awareness. The murals created through this project are not just art—they can become symbols of Maitland’s collective identity and a celebration of its vibrant, evolving culture.

Murals can act as a catalyst for community pride, inspiring a sense of ownership and belonging in the people who live and work here.

These public art installations can have a positive ripple effect, encouraging local businesses, boosting tourism, and even promoting safety and security.

When people take pride in their surroundings, they are more likely to care for them, creating a cycle of preservation, care, and engagement that benefits everyone.
