Artist 19 Marina Abramović Performance Art

Marina Abramović is a Serbian performance artist based in New York. Her work explores the relationship between performer and audience, the limits of the body, and the possibilities of the mind. She confronting pain, blood, and physical limits of the body through interactive art.

She exploring the physical and mental limits of her being, she has withstood pain, exhaustion, and danger in the quest for emotional and spiritual transformation. Abramovic's concern is with creating works that ritualize the simple actions of everyday life like lying, sitting, dreaming, and thinking; in effect the manifestation of a unique mental state. Her body itself is her medium. Todays focus will be on Abramović’ performance art as a whole.

This artist challenges herself through her fears and in how to push both herself and art. I have great respect for her and I think part of what makes her work so engaging is the audience is a part of the work. Your reaction to her art is what creates the art. It allows for very critical self reflection and explores uncomfortable topics.

The pieces I’ve chosen includes ‘Dragon Heads’ and ‘Cleaning the Mirror’ in these two you can see the external will and force she brings to her performances.

In ‘Balkan Baroque’ she washes cow bones which deals deeply with death and repetition. ‘The house with the Ocean View’ deals with routine and voyeurism. Then in ‘The artist is present’ she deals with personal relations and silence as she sits day in and day out in perfect stillness . The way she uses her body as a story telling narrative is a masterful tool. I believe this is the type of you need to experience in person.

I think it’s becoming truer and truer that as art develops it needs all senses and a simple documentation does not compare to the true experience. #celebratingwomensmonth #celebratingfemaleartists #marinaabramovic#performanceart
